You may have seen or heard of the recent storms in Menorca, over the last few days of August. Strong winds and heavy rain hit the island, as well as the other Balearic islands over 26-28th August.
Over the UK bank holiday weekend with many coming back home with the school holidays coming to a close, those who remained in Menorca and the other Balearic islands were met with unusually stormy and dangerous weather. Typically weather this time of year is consistently in the 30°C – our Menorca weather guide has further detail of typical temperatures.
An amber weather warning was issued for the Balearic islands over the weekend of 26/27th August as the islands, including Menorca were hit with high winds and heavy downpours of rain.
On the neighbouring island of Mallorca a P&A cruise ship sailing from the UK collided with a freight vessel in Palma, with minor injuries caused on a small number of passengers.
Scenes like the below captured on mobile phones weren’t uncommon. With the streets of Ciutadella flooded with a torrent of water gushing through the cities streets.

As a result of these Menorca storms and dangerous weather over the Balearic islands many passengers flights were either delayed, or subsequently cancelled.
These cancellations or delays were exacerbated by the news of the UK chaos and travel disruption caused by the Nats air traffic control fault, resulting in increasing delays to UK holidaymakers amongst many others who travel via UK airspace, for example Ireland.
