Menorca Hospitals & Healthcare – What You Need To Know

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller abroad, or it’s your first time. Healthcare and hospitals are a need to know. Menorca Hospitals are no different and hopefully you won’t need them, but they’re there to help if you do.

EHIC & GHIC Cards

The Accident and Emergency departments (URGENCIAS) will most likely be your first stop. Ensure you all relevant documentation with you, this includes the UK Global Health Insurance Card (UK GHIC), or the older UK European Health Insurance Card (UK EHIC), any travel insurance documentation you have and your passport.

Both the UK GHIC and new UK EHIC are free of charge. The UK government website has further details here. However, these cards are not substitutes for insurance, which we strongly advise getting before your travels, you can search for a range of travel insurance on Travel Extras here.

How To Use Your EHIC or GHIC cards

You are entitled to use your EHIC or GHIC card to access medically necessary state-provided healthcare when visiting an EU country or Switzerland.

The below has been taken from the official government website as we feel this is important information for you.

Medically necessary healthcare means healthcare that cannot reasonably wait until you come back to the UK. Whether treatment is necessary is decided by the healthcare provider in the country you’re visiting.

Medically necessary healthcare includes things like:

  • emergency treatment and visits to A&E
  • treatment for a long-term or pre-existing medical condition
  • routine medical care for pre-existing conditions that need monitoring
  • routine maternity care, as long as you’re not going abroad to give birth
  • oxygen therapy and kidney dialysis

You’ll need to pre-arrange some treatments with the relevant healthcare provider in the country you’re visiting – for example, kidney dialysis or chemotherapy.

Check the Foreign Office country guides on GOV.UK for information on how to access treatment in the country you’re visiting

Healthcare through the state in the EU or Switzerland is not necessarily free. Therefore you may need to pay for services that you would get for free through the NHS. The EHIC or GHIC card may entitle you to cheaper care on this occasion. But never guaranteed.

State Menorca Hospitals

There are two state run hospitals on the island of Menorca. The two state Menorca hospitals can be found in the two large cities in the east and west, the capital Mahon and Ciutadella.

The Menorca state hospitals, relevant departments and clinics may not have any English speaking staff when you attend and waiting times are often longer when compared to a private health facility.

However, carry you EHIC/GHIC card with you and when you visit a healthcare centre in Menorca. Present this card upon arrival but be sure to contact your insurance company as soon as possible. Holiday insurance companies have different methods, which differ company to company. Some you will pay upfront and recoup the costs, whereas others may deal directly with the medical centre. Whatever it is, ensure you contact your insurance company immediately.
