Located near the centre of the island of Alaior Menorca is a charming and historic town with a unique blend of traditional Menorcan architecture, cultural heritage, and modern amenities.

Found in the centre of the island and conveniently just off of the main Me-1, Alaior offers something different from many of the coastal and tourist beach resorts such as Cala’n Forcat or Cala en Bosc.

With no beach to entertain, wandering through the local streets, visiting during the fiestas provides a unique experience.

Alaior Beaches

As mentioned previously, there are no beaches in Alaior due to it central location on the island. However, your closest beaches head south to Son Bou, which also happens to be the largest beach on the island, Cala en Porter, again to the south, or Arenal d’en Castell to the north of the island.

Alaior Amenities

Amenities are plentiful in Alaior, as many locals live here all year around you can expect everything you’d need when passing through, or if staying in Alaior.

Starting with pharmacies, you have a few within the centre of the town. Farmacia Castell, Farmàcia Mascaró Caules and Parafarmacia D’Aló will be able to provide the majority of your medical needs. However, for more urgent medical attention, head to any of the below which are the closest medical centres to Alaior.

Things to do in Alaior and Alaior Activities

Being less of a tourist town, obviously there aren’t the coastal activities you’d expect. That being said you have some great alternative activities in Alaior you can do.

The local sports centre Poliesportiu Municipal D’Alaior and local park barras Alaior Park as well as the local Alaior skatepark. Another active pastime could be cycling, Lloguer Bicicletes Menorca – A RODA offers everything from buying to hiring a bike in Alaior, you can find them located here, or their website here. The Alaior gym, Pau Gym and Tennis & Padel at Club Tenis Alayor also are available to keep you active.

For more relaxed activities in Alaior, you could head to local art museum in LÔAC, Alaior Art Contemporani, or perhaps visit the local Alaior library at Biblioteca Pública Municipal. Alternative you can wander the streets and visit some of the cultural attractions in Alaior that include the beautiful church of Santa Eulalia Church (Iglesia de Santa Eulalia), the archaeological site Taula de Torralba d’en Salord situated to the south of the town, or explore the old town of Alaior with traditional building, old squares and historic buildings at the Casco Antiguo.

Finally, you of course have the traditional Menorca festival – Jaleo (click to read more). Alaior have their own Jaleo in the summer which typically falls on the second weekend in August. Horse dancing, traditional music, dancing, food and drinks. The perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in traditional Menorcan culture.

We start with one of the best rated restaurants in Alaior. Vitaca Menorca Alaior serves up dishes that aren’t too complicated but taste great, from deep fried baby squid, nachos, Tuna salads, Cuttlefish, tapas and bocadillos (baguettes), grilled meats and vegetables, as well as desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth. Restaurant Can Jaumot Alaior provides simple but effective cooking. With various tapas style dishes, pizzas, other Mediterranean dishes in a café style. Don’t expect fine dining, but do expect a friendly atmosphere, good friendly at affordable prices. You can find their location in Alaior here.

Es Festuc

Moving to the indoor restaurant of Es Festuc Alaior, here you can expect a warm atmosphere and typical Menorca/Mediterranean dishes a plenty – from squid ink croquettes, cuttlefish, Menorcan lamb, carpaccio and more. For later nights we would recommend heading to Ciutadella, where you can find plenty of late night bars and nightclubs as well as café style bars to grab a drink and bite to eat from.

The nightlife in Alaior is somewhat different to that of the coastal resorts, expect bars and cafes that provide the hustle and bustle of locals chatting over a small beer of glass of wine. I wouldn’t expect much Karaoke, or Bingo for example. However, the odd live musician in the summer may make an appearance.

Bar Geminis, Sa Teulera, Ca na Divina and Degusta-Lô, for example provide exactly that, café style bars providing bottles of beer, glasses of wine and many tapas style snacks to help pass the time and keep you well fed and watered.

Alaior Hotels

Options are somewhat limited for Alaior hotels and in the surrounding streets. Don’t expect the large coastal resort hotels with plenty of amenities however. That being said there are a few options.

With multiple, unique rooms from double and twin rooms, to even sea view rooms, impressive considering you’re not in a coastal resort. Instead nestled into the Menorcan countryside.

Alaior Bus Routes

Many bus routes pass through Alaior on their way to the main cities of Ciutadella and Mahon, or on their way to the coastal towns.

In summer passing through Alaior you have 7 different bus routes. Including Lines 1, 32, 33, 44, 51, 71 and 73. Outside of summer be sure to check the official Menorcan bus route website here. Prices vary too, depending on the journey length, your start and end destination.

Airport Transfers from Mahon Airport to Alaior

There are multiple methods to reach Alaior from Mahon airport, shared transfer services, car hire, taxi and even the local bus, although there are no direct buses so requires some planning ahead – but head over to our Menorca bus guide for further information. Airport Taxi transfer to Alaior

Taxi transfers from Mahon Airport to Alaior don’t take long at all, approximately 15 minutes or so due to the airport being on the outskirts of Mahon and Alaior the first major town you reach heading west. There’s aalso taxi rank at Mahon Airport just outside of the main airport terminal for easy access. Costing around €20 one way per taxi.
