Menorca Airport Car Hire
Undoubtedly exploring Menorca by car is the easiest way to see the island, or moped. Unfortunately public transport is limited as doesn’t always get you to the hidden gems Menorca has to offer.
We recommend hiring a car well in advance during the peak summer season of July and August. Cars are limited on the island and naturally the increased influx of guests on the island reduce availability and push up car hire prices in Menorca. Whereas outside of the peak season, availability increases and prices are more affordable.
Car hire companies are located at Menorca Airport and can be easily found on Floor 0. These companies include: Hertz; Avis; Europcar; Enterprise. You can compare car hire prices from Menorca airport here.
Menorca Airport Public Transport

History of Menorca airport
The Menorca airport history is a unique and interesting one for those enthusiasts amongst us and the beginning of the airport was marked by the Civil Spanish War. Therefore a strong argument was put forward in the requirement for a military airbase on Menorca.
Subsequently work on the airport began in the summer of 1936 to level the airfield. By the end of the conflict in 1939 the usable area of runway had reached 850 metres. With the first aircraft landing a Fiat biplane having come from the neighbouring island of Mallorca, from the capital Palma.
During the 1940’s the airfield was barely used. However, in the summer of 1949 the Ministry of Aviation decide to open the then named airport, San Luis Airport to civil air traffic, domestic and international traffic in addition to international technical stopovers. With the inaugural flight made by Aviaco from Barcelona in August of 1949 establishing a consistent route from Barcelona to Mahon.
Over the years there were several extensions to the runway, including extensions in 1959 and 1961 with entry into the Aviaco’s DC-4s made further extensions necessary.
Significantly in September 1965 the San Luis Airport officially changed names to what its now commonly referred to as – Mahon Airport.
Passenger growth at the airport
Over time, passenger numbers increased with modern day tourism as well as the increasing size of planes with advancements in technology. Ultimately leading to a review of the airports location resulting in a new airport needing to be built from 1968 onwards.
Work began on this new airport in 1967 and on March 24th 1969 the new Mahon Airport was opened in its current location with a single runway and terminal to service guests. This new airport marked the tourism boom and passenger numbers through this airport doubled in only a few years. In 1968 112,000 travellers used the previous San Luis airport, whereas in 1970 239,000 passengers passed through the new facility.
The international traffic area was increased in 1977 to absorb the huge increase in airport traffic, tripling between 1970 and 1979.
Mahon airport upgrades
Improvements and upgrades followed due to the ever increasing tourism numbers. For example on May 1988 work was completed on another terminal. Split into two floors: A ground floor for arrivals and baggage reclaim and an upper floor which served a joint check-in area and two boarding areas for domestic and international flights.
Meanwhile in recent years the departures terminal has received a well deserved upgrade into a more spacious and airy terminal. Increasing the array of shops, restaurants and areas of rest for travellers.
