Menorca is located in the Mediterranean sea and one of the Balearic islands.

Menorca’s highest point on the island is under 400 metres.

A relatively flat island, Menorca’s highest point is Mount Toro and even that only reaches 358 metres. Even more amazing when compared to neighbouring island Mallorca, which highest peak reach of Puig Major is just under 1,500 metres.

The island of Menorca is a declared UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Inaugurated on October 7th 1993, Menorca achieved the UNESCO biosphere reserve status by displaying high levels of compatibility between the development of economic activities, consumption of resources and the conservation of heritage and landscapes on the island. Menorca has a dedicated walking path around the whole island.

The Camí de Cavalls or Horse Path in Catalan, circles the whole of Menorca at an impressive length of around 185 kilometres in total. Broken down into 20 smaller sections the dusty path takes in the beautiful coast line, across rocky terrain, up and down cliff sides and hills, passing through many of the best resorts in Menorca.

One of the largest natural ports in the world is found in the capital, Mahon.

Located in the capital, Mahon, the harbour of Mahon stands at around 5 kilometres long and up to 900 metres wide.

Menorcan’s speak multiple languages

Menorcan has two official languages, Spanish and Catalan. However, Menorcan locals often speak a dialect of Catalan, called Menorquí. Moreover, many Menorcan locals speak English to a high level due to the influence of English tourism on the island.

Mayonniase is believed to have first been created in Mahon, Maó

According to one theory, the sauce was first made by a French chef in 1756 upon the capture of Mahon. With no cream available to prepare a sauce with eggs, cream was replaced with olive oil and there we have it, the earliest form of Mayonnaise. Hence the named adopting the capital of Menorca, Maó.

England, France and Spain have all ruled over Menorca

Throughout history the tiny island of Menorca has been under rule by various countries throughout the 1700’s. British rule to French rule, back to British rule and finally back to Spain. Spain has since ruled over the island of Menorca and still do today.

Menorca is first place in Spain to see the sunrise

Head to the eastern side of the island, around Mahon and you can welcome the day and morning to a beautiful sunset. On the flip side, you’ll be one of the last in Spain to watch the sunset. Perhaps at one of our favourite sunset spots in Menorca.

There are no large native mammals on Menorca

Menorca has various smaller mammals native to the island, including rabbits, bats, rats and mice. But there are no larger native mammals. However, you could head to the only Zoo on the island, Lloc de Menorca.

Menorca population is under 100,000

Menorca has plenty to offer and the population swells with holidaymakers throughout the summertime. But permanently, Menorca’s population stands at around 99,005. With the vast majority residing in the capital, Mahon and the larger town of Ciutadella to the west.
