Menorca is famous for various things including it’s wonderful climate, beautiful walking routes, friendly locals, great food and drink, wonderful traditions and a laid back Mediterranean lifestyle.
Menorcan Weather
Of course we had to start with Menorca being famous for it’s weather. We have a dedicated page to summarise the weather in Menorca. However, to summarise the summers are long and warm. Pleasant warm evenings and day time temperatures regularly reaching 30 and over 30 degrees throughout the summer.
During the winter the temperature stays relatively pleasant and doesn’t drop to unbearable levels. Warm during the day, but temperatures dropping and becoming quite cool at night. It can also get wet around the same time the UK does, any time between October to April.
The Beaches
With an almost perfect location sat in the Mediterranean sea and completely surrounded by the warm water, combined with the beautiful golden sandy coastline. The Menorcan beaches are a sight to behold. Explore our must see Menorcan beaches guide here. However it’s worth noting there are plentiful beaches to explore, all with a uniqueness.
Some may be wide open expanses of fine sand, whereas others may be protected by cliffs and trees with rocky terrain all around. Whereas others may be a small cove or inlet. You may be able to park close by, or perhaps walk 15 minutes. The coastline of Menorca and beaches are worth exploring.
The Fiestas
Menorca is also famous for it’s fiestas throughout the summer months and most notable the horse festivals. We have our Menorcan festivals page dedicated to everything you need to know about the fiestas. Picture horse shows, plenty of food and drink, enjoyment, spectacular feats of skills, as well as the slightly crazy with the Jaleo – which you can find out more about here.
Here you’re more likely to find locals enjoying themselves than tourists. Walking around the hustle and bustle you’ll see locals sitting outside their homes catching up with one another.
Whereas the younger Menorcan locals are more likely to be walking around with Pomada in hand itching to touch the horses heart for good luck.
The Hiking and Walking
We don’t particularly advise this during the peak of summer due to the heat. But if you’re visiting in the cooler months and wondering what is Menorca famous for, then walking or hiking is your answer.
The Camí de Cavalls trail is a single trail that spans the circumference of the entire island. Split into 20 joined trails that can be individually walked. Easily visible, sign posted and well marked make for an easy to follow route which leaves an lasting impression. The route snakes around countryside, cliff tops, rocky inlets and caves, pinewoods, beaches and of course the many resorts and towns you’ll pass along the route.
Food and Drink
As you can imagine with many countries based around the Mediterranean, Menorca is as well famous for a few special drinks and speciality food dishes. For drink, look no further than Xoriguer gin. Specifically, Xoriguer gin mixed with Lemon Fanta to create the Pomada. A popular local drink with the younger and old.
For food, you have Mahon cheese. Ensaimada, which is a sweet pastry. Caldereta de Langosta, a lobster stew. Sobrasada, a spiced sausage similar to Chorizo. Stuffed squid is also a popular dish on many Menorcan restaurant menus.
